Summer Decorating Tips for NYC Terraces

With summer just around the corner, we’re all dying to get out to enjoy the good weather. If you have a terrace or back garden, this time of year, however, often involves substantial cleaning and sprucing up of these long forgotten outdoor spaces. Even if you are lucky enough to have some outdoor space, it’s probably a relatively small space (we live in New York, after all!) which can make the planning and design of it a challenge. The key to making the most of your outdoor living space is to find furniture that is flexible, space-conscious, and crowd-pleasing.
Choosing furniture that allows you to be flexible with arrangement and function is one of the most important considerations when planning your outdoor space. One of my favorite products is the Baleares Modular Lounger from Frontgate. This line comes in a set of four individual wicker pieces that can be arranged together or separately.  You can either create a more intimate atmosphere with the large daybed or instead create a social sitting area clustered around a small table. With a retractable canopy and cushions that come in five different fabric combinations, the Baleares is a perfect all-in-one outdoor set that makes a big impact in a cohesive way.

Space-saving furniture that can easily be stored away during the off seasons is another bonus feature in outdoor furnishings. For example, Harbour Outdoor’s folding LCA chairs are a fresh take on the classic director’s chair and are easily foldable for quick moving in a party atmosphere. They’re also elegant enough to stand along as dining chairs, or even light armchairs, to keep your backyard sophisticated, not campy. Likewise, when summer comes to an end, the chairs can easily be put in storage without taking up too much of the precious little indoor storage space you have in your apartment.

A dining table paired with a banquette is another way to spruce up your outdoor living by bringing a taste of indoor formal living to the outdoors while at the same time accommodating parties of all sizes. Instead of investing in a myriad of chairs, a dining banquette provides seating for a small gathering or can accommodate a host of children for a birthday party.  Also, if built off an existing wall, a banquette can save you much needed space.

Finally, accessories are what will tie the space together and set your backyard apart from the neighbors’. For example, illuminated planters can act as outdoor lighting, adding a soft glow to evening entertaining, while showcasing your garden. They also double as great ice buckets for barbecues and dinner parties when emptied. I like the illuminated planters from Jane Hamley Wells, who has fantastic shapes and colors. Similarly, lanterns are a classic outdoor accessory to complete the mood. My favorite company is Riado whose rope handle detail puts the perfect nautical touch on a polished nickel hurricane lantern.
With these tips in mind, I’m sure preparing your summer urban oasis will prove to be an enjoyable – and easy! – experience.
